This book and Hultgren's 'Art of Animal Drawing' are basically your Draw Animals 101 class. Hamm gives you a solid foundation in anatomy and bauplans, which helps when moving from the animals he covers specifically to animals he does not. He uses comparison and really clear diagrams to show you the foundations without bogging you down in Greys Anatomy type names of muscles and bones. This is definitely a book I'd give as a gift to anyone who wanted to learn to draw animals, and as an artist of 20+ years I still refer to this book and consider it so much a requirement that when I lost it during a bout of homelessness, it was one of the first books I wanted back after I gained a home again. Very important! And definitely pick up Hultgren's Art of Animal Drawing alongside!

Great resource for art teachers. So often I'd have student ask me how to draw a particular animal. I've found this book a very helpful resource for students and teachers alike. It also trains a beginning artist to look for basic shapes within more complex ones. An overall good tool to have on one's bookshelf.
This book, combined with "Drawing the Head and Figure," and "Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes" is a critical part of what I consider a complete course in commercial art, barring color theory. Many good books are available on color theory, but these three volumes condense everything you need to know to illustrate.Jack Hamm's style is dramatic and powerful. His instructions are simple and he's best for giving many, many examples. It's easy to find anything you want to copy. His proportion diagrams for cat bodies in motion or at rest are fantastic. The animal I was most familiar with drawing was cats, so the cats section gave me great trust in the bear, dog, horse and other animal sections. He covers a wide variety of animals with clear instructions.This book is a perfect example of the "hundreds of examples, very little text" style of art instruction. You won't find many step by step projects, but it's content-heavy. Treat it as a slow read. I could've handled it at age 9-12 but it's best used taken a page at a time, trying the exercises, reading and rereading.It's reread value makes it a must-own. All of Jack Hamm's art instruction books are the sort that demand replacement now and then for being worn out, because they're good long term references. No matter how good I get at drawing, there's always something new to learn. At a bargain price under $10, this is a good investment in your future as an artist, whether you're a goal driven future professional, a hobbyist, already a pro artist.It isn't an easy read, but it's a well indexed easy reference. The only comparable animal drawing book I've read is Charles R. Knight's "Animal Drawing: Anatomy and Action for Artists." They complement each other well because Knight goes a little deeper into natural history, fur patterns and textures and details -- while Hamm gives a lot more on motion, proportion and general drawing techniques valuable if you're drawing the human animal or anything else. I recommend it without reservation.
I really like anything that Jack Hamm has put out. His drawings are easy to replicate. There are so many different views and sides of the same animal, which really helps students start to see how line drawings can come together to create a solid image. I have three of his drawing instruction books and they are the most popular among my students to borrow. For any budding artist, I would recommend this book.
Jack Hamm has a nice and simple way of teaching. My niece also borrowed this. I have his other book on the human form ... hhmmmm, I did. Maybe it was that one that she borrowed. :) That just shows that this is a wonderful choice for a good long time of learning. The paperback is the best too.
My 13 year-old grandson has some ability copying images and items in real life. This book gives great step by step but also a lot of notes on shapes of eyes and fur, etc. He may not read all the notes before he tries to draw the animal, but when something doesn't look right, he goes back and reads them. It's been fun to watch.
Mr. Hamm teaches in a way I can understand. He simplifies and examines drawing in the way I learn, by remembering certain techniques and "tricks" of drawing. This book really works for me.Bill
