Some years ago in support of my husband’s then high cholesterol, I put my family on a low-fat/low cholesterol diet. I bought a book by the American Heart Association and followed that. Always fairly healthy previously, I begun to have a number of health issues slowly appear from non-stop heart palpitations and hormonal fluctuations to anxiety, depression, and extreme insomnia. My youngest son began to have extreme behavioral issues and problems with self-regulation and then finally, severe depression in 3rd grade. Making a long story short, much of what I learned from Nora’s first book, Primal Body Primal Mind, helped transform my life and that of my son’s. Now, six years later for me, and 5 for my son, our lives continue to be exponentially better and we are no longer on medications (the meds have been gone for years too). In Primal Fat Burner, I especially resonate with the chapter, Think Fat as I am quite certain our brains were inflamed and starved of fat and while my son was healing, I saw a direct correlation with his behavior and the balance of fat and starchy carbohydrates. I was amazed at the effect of increasing butter and decreasing starchy carbs. We were shocked at his regression when he ate gluten (after a good amount of healing, he no longer has such an extreme reaction when he is exposed, but we do not have gluten in our house and he brings a nutrient dense lunch to school). As a nutritional therapy practitioner now (I was inspired to back to school so I could teach this to others!), I really appreciate the chapters, “A Field Guide to Fat-Soluble Nutrients†and “Primal Fat Burning May Help Prevent and Alleviate Disease.†Personally for me, the dietary approach that Nora presents in Primal Fat Burner has helped me maintain a lean body after menopause and also has helped me pretty much avoid all the pesky modern-day menopausal symptoms that are incorrectly referred to as normal. I’m 54 and as of this writing have no aches or pains or no known health problems. I am full of energy and feel much more vibrant than I did when I was younger. I work extremely hard too! Lastly, I want to say what a wonderful, genuine person Nora is. I met her while I was going to nutritional therapy school (NTA) and ever since, she has been nothing but supportive and encouraging. Always giving me a hug, remembering my name, and asking how things are going. She truly cares. You can hear the passion in her voice when she speaks. You can feel her emotion. And quite honestly, the content of Primal Fat Burner can literally save your life! [Nora, I wish you much success with this book! I can’t wait to share it with my clients!]
THANK YOU NORA! I loved Primal Body Primal Mind first. Have read it three times and used it as a reference many more times. So much information! I researched on my own for 13 years in a quest to "cure" my methylation issues brought on by a lifetime of "healthy low fat, whole grain, high fruit diet". Both healthy parents died of Alzheimer's and cancer. Genetic testing revealed my issues, but doctors said sorry, no cure. Tried paleo. No change. Tried low carb, high protein. No change. An easy, written, detailed plan was what I needed. Primal Fat Burner is it! I needed more fat, lots of good fat! Also lower protein comsumption, .5 gram per pound of body weight. Who knew? After a thirteen year war, victory! Incredibly, on day two, I felt different. Full of energy, no cravings, satisfied, calm, and craziest of all, 6 pounds lighter in 7 days with greatly reduced inflamation. I have not lost a single pound in five years of strict protocol adherence. GET THIS BOOK! FOLLOW THIS PLAN! LIVE THIS QUALITY OF LIFE! Nora, I think you have saved my life. Thank you!
Flawless information, exceedingly well-researched, presented in an inviting, clear way. I'm already using this book in my naturopathic endocrinology clinic to assist folks understand "why" I recommend this way of eating, and especially "how" to make the transition. As a hormone doctor, I have always advocated LCHF for a wide range of medical conditions from high cholesterol and overweight/obesity, to insulin resistance, Low-T, PMS, menopause, adrenal fatigue, and hypothyroidism. Nora's new book is The. Best. Tool. Yet. Thank you, Nora Gedgaudas, for helping me to help my patients!
I feel like Primal Fat Burner should be subtitled "debunking veganism." Seriously, I want to bookslap every vegan in yoga class who has ever made a snide remark to me about my paleo diet with a copy of Primal Fat Burner. In this book, Nora successfully and unapologetically debunks the rampant fallacy that a vegetarian or vegan diet is healthy, and presents a well supported theory that the human animal is actually designed to be a carnivore. Having someone disprove the increasingly widespread lie that veganism is healthy for humans in a book by a major publisher is a breath of fresh air... and Nora does not make one negative statement about people who turn up their nose at animal foods; the heavily footnoted facts more than speak for themselves. The most valuable content in this book is a detailed explanation of how and why animal source foods are required for proper functioning of the human body and why plant sources of minerals in the same letter group are inadequate at best and detrimental at worst. So no, you cannot substitute the Vitamin A in carrots for the Vitamin A in a steak. This is probably the biggest "plant based" fallacy that Nora easily disproves with an unbiased presentation of factual information. She also debunks common vegan agenda claims like "humans caused the extinction of large land animals" (actually it was climate change) and "meat gives me a stomachache now, therefore it's bad for me" (actually, you broke your digestion by avoiding meat). The only people veganism is "healthy" for are commercial grain manufacturers who can reliably stuff their toxic products into a niche audience for whom grains are the only remotely satiating foods on the menu. This book includes very detailed and sometimes dense scientific explanations of how precisely animal source saturated fat is a requirement to be a fully functioning human. Although Nora explains the difference in nutrient profile between grassfed and grain fed meat, somehow she forgot to mention a very important fact. THE FAT DEPOSITS IN FEEDLOT MEAT ARE TOXIC. The harmful toxins in their unfit for consumption feed are shuttled into fat cells to get them out of the bloodstream. If you absolutely cannot afford grassfed, pasture raised meat, and you must eat feedlot meat, get the leanest possible cuts and remove the fat, and supplement with grass fed suet (which is like a dollar a pound). Considering that the target audience of this book is people who buy fad diet books, that is a significant enough omission to subtract a star from my rating.I went into this book knowing that the publisher forced Nora to cut out 3/4 of the original science based content and rewrite it as a gimmicky fad diet book with meal plan targeted toward the usual people who buy those things. Personally I think she should have canned them and found a better publisher. She tried to say in interviews that she didn't dumb down the book, but... eh... yes she did. Half the content is a lot of redundant marketing talk about how you'll lose weight and reduce the effects of aging if you become a Primal Fat Burner. *gag* and fully half the book is the meal plans and recipes. The recipe section is impossible to navigate in the Kindle format, it's just "Chapter 12" with no recipe index or anything... so if you're buying this for the meal plan thing, you need to get the print book. There is one thing I didn't understand though... Nora starts the book by explaining that homo erectus evolved into modern homo sapiens by stuffing their faces with meat and eating very few vegetables. Then when we get to the diet how-to part, she tells you to limit your protein consumption and stuff your face with low carb vegetables. Although the reasons for limiting protein are clearly defined and make sense, I'm scratching my head a bit about how a diet that's supposedly based on our evolutionary history is the exact opposite of the food ratios hunter-gatherers ate. Maybe Nora can address this discrepancy in a public statement, assuming that she reads this review at some point. This book is well worth $13 even with the shortcomings and the fact that the recipe section is unusable on kindle format. I would recommend reading PFB as an updated fat-centric supplement to Primal Body Primal Mind if you've already read that one, or also reading PBPM if you haven't, since it explains a lot of nutritional science that is missing from this book.If anyone from Amazon is reading this review, PLEASE ADD A LINKED RECIPE INDEX TO THE KINDLE!!!!!
