20 years after it was written, this is still the best book available on the US airline industry, notwithstanding that it's increasingly dated. Hard Landing was written 15 years after the dawn of US airline deregulation -- those were incredibly tumultuous years, with the collapse of Eastern, Pan Am, Braniff, the advent of frequent flyer programs, of so-called "yield management" (charging different prices for seats on the same flight depending on the conditions under which they were sold), the birth of new airlines such as People Express and America West, the bankruptcies of airlines like Continental, and so forth. Indeed, as good a job as Petzinger does, he only hits a few of these topics.Inevitably, not all of the issues that mattered then are relevant today. Petzinger spends a lot of time on the topic of control of global distribution systems ("computer reservation systems" is how most folks think of them) and the order of the display of flights within them (from which human travel agents would select flights). Yes, this was a big deal back in the day, it did truly matter. And yet today, it's irrelevant. Airlines don't even own such systems any longer, and travel agents, at least the human kind, are largely obsolete. What we really need is someone to do a volume on the subsequent 20 years up to today. Who could have guessed that the next 20 years would be at least as tumultuous as the era described in Hard Landing? As an indication, Hard Landing mentions America West Airlines only twice, both times in passing. And yet, America West turned out to be one of the dominant forces in the past 20 years, with that management team merging first with US Airways and then with American. Little America West is now, in the guise of American, the largest airline in the world. That is not to criticize Petzinger -- no one else would have guessed this would happen either. But it's just another indication of how much we need someone to write Hard Landing II.

Quite an interesting story really, and well written. If you are a Pan Am fan this, of course is a must read.At the end of the day, this company could have been saved. And not by spending any taxpayers money.I doubt if any corporation ever did more to help this country. Starting with FDR's flight to Casablanca and ending with Desert Storm.Pan Am did more than it's share and put it's equipment and flight crews at risk every step of the way.De-regulation and an uniformed president, (Jimmy Carter) put Pan Am in the grave. All's the government had to do was give Pan Am the domestic flights it needed to feed it's overseas flights....and we would still have this company!!

While the book was written in 2010 the story of How American airlines battled for dominance in the skies is still as entertaining and informative as ever. The writing style is engaging, and the book simply flies by.

Hard Landing by Thomas Petzinger is one of the most comprehensive overviews of the airline industry and its subsets. This book not only covers the major players and looks at the personal lives of the titans who built the industry but also the rise and fall of companies such as Pan Am, Eastern and TWA. It focuses mostly on United and American but also looks at groups like Southwest, Frontier and Barniff. From the struggles of deregulation to the price wars of the 1980's this is one of the most comprehensive overviews. What is also nice about the book is the time spent on the related industries especially the travel agents. The book looks at how travel agents structures changed after deregulation and what happened in the hotel, rental car and service industries as a result of the airlines. Finally one of the most interesting parts of the book was the development of the computerized registration systems and their effect on air travel. From yield management of what to charge per ticket to maximizing flights in the air the numbers game of the airline industry is shown in all its glory. Overall just a fascinating book to read and very well executed.

I grew up in an Eastern Air Lines family. I remember a lot of the history firsthand from the 80's. The author really did an in-depth accounting of all the reasons why events occurred. There's a number of profiles on the characters involved as well. I found it interesting reading on what could easily be a really boring subject.

Petzinger puts the reader front and center of critical events and conversations from the infancy of the airline industry to roughly fifteen years after deregulation, at which point the industry is shaken to its core and was never the same since. Critical reading to anyone with even a passing interest in the history of commercial aviation.

This is a delightful non-fiction history of airlines since the beginning of the jet age. It is a story about airline pioneers in the post-deregulation period, and top airline executives of legacy airlines trying to cope with the introduction of low-cost competition. Thomas Pezinger Jr. describes in fantastic detail airline's strategy for competing during the regulatory era, and how their world changed after deregulation. This book is difficult to put down once you begin to read it. It has the thrill and suspense of a murder mystery. Very enjoyable.

Bought this book for my masters class. I found myself heavily engaged in it and ended up finishing it in just a few days. Its a great inside read on the foundation of major US domestic carriers (I didn't know that Pan Am's South American and Pacific expansion was the foundation for the Interncontinental hotel chain). It's short on any technical analysis though and obviously much has happened since this book came out in 1996, but it's still a fascinating read nevertheless.
