Very complicated. I bought this so a family member could pray the morning and evening liturgy along with me as I have the four volume version I was that since this was shorter this would be answer way for them to follow along. It is not. I recommend either getting the four volume set or get the ibreviary app. The prayers in the shorter Christian prayer four week plaster did not match up with the translation in the longer form liturgy nor with any of the app versions. It needs a full instruction guide at the beginning this book pre table of context just to navigate it, which it does not have. Other people who have reviewed this prayer book have made this complaint as well, so I don't know what the people giving it a perfect five star rating are talking about. If you take the time to learn it, maybe you can learn to love it, and give it a four star rating but as it is it doesn't measure up to the book it is suppose to summarize and be based on. Also, if this is going to be your first prayer book or a gift for a novice layperson the people's common prayer book by St Joseph Press is much easier to navigate and understand, it explains what, when, and how to pray, and the St Joseph has a mini liturgy of the Hours within it that is much easier to follow and use.
Genuine 4-week psalter version of the Divine Office also known as Liturgy of the Hours. The real thing. I love Hail Mary's and Our Fathers, but repetition only up to a point, so this Shorter Christian Prayer is prayer expansion perfection. All from scripture, it flows like the mass. It can be your only book for praying the Office or because it's very portable and compact so as to not draw attention to yourself, it's great for taking to work or to Sunday mass for prayer during moments when your mind wanders. At certain times with people in the vicinity, this book is also better than the digital version on my phone. Reading from a smartphone can give a bad impression to others if it were during mass or other gatherings. At home this book or a larger version could be used. I prefer a larger version with more seasonal variety when my surroundings permit it. It should be noted that this 4-week print version was my only resource to first practice the Divine Office and make it a daily habit.
I have been searching for the perfect Morning and Evening prayer book from the Liturgy of the Hour, no luck with the British version published by Collins. The print was too small and too poetic for my needs of simple prayer that spoke to my American ears. With the one published by the Liturgical Press was the same story ( small print, difficult to keep it open, etc). Then after so many other versions came the Shorter Christian Prayer by Catholic Publishing Company,larger print easy for your eyes, keeps open as you pray, understandable american english and beautiful two color art.I have found the one for me, and am happy to do my prayers with such a handy and beautiful prayer book.
Shorter Christian Prayer is a small version of the multi-volumed Liturgy of the Hours, and is excellent for Catholics and others who wish to have prayers for morning and evening, and to have a guide to follow the seasons of the year, Advent, Ordinary Time, Lent, Easter, the Ascension and Pentecost. Some of of the weekly prayers are repeated by the user because there is not room to contain a different one for each day. The instructions for following the liturgy are listed within the book, as each appropriate time. For example, the Invitory prayer for the Easter Season is Psalm 95, with a particular response to each stanza. By the end of six weeks, one can say the Psalm by heart! There is the same gospel reading for every morning, and every evening, from the Gospel of Luke. Reading them slowly and with thought helps one understand the greatness of God's gift to us, Jesus Christ.
I greatly admire those who commit to morning and evening prayer, though I am still learning. This book is less intimidating than the Christian Prayer volume, and easier to carry. It gives us the liturgical year in abbreviated form, though it still contains seasonal variations, hymns, and commons.This is a second purchase, it will make a great gift.
Despite the junky illustrations, a great little book for Mornng, Evening, and Compline prayers on the road. Hyms included (w/o music). Very readable print for tired eyes. Manageable, book stays open. Everything the 4 vol. LOH has for these specific offices.
As someone just coming to the Catholic faith, I found this prayer book to be a wonderful surprise. It is full of prayers for so many different situations in our lives, from a simple morning prayer to prayers under difficult circumstances. I love the old-fashioned drawings and pictures. The text is large, but I find it makes it really easy to read the prayers aloud with family. This little book is helping me learn how to pray.
Keep this in the car for those days when I'm rushed or when I'm not home to say the regular Christian Prayer. It's very convenient and has most of the important prayers and antiphons. Only has propers for major Feasts and Solemnities though. I find it useful for a busy life.
