gift for my husband... i don't know that he has read it yet
This is the third edition of this book that I've purchased since I first became interested in screenwriting. The instructional portion continues to impress me and it has been updated to reflect new "rules" since the last edition. The book is actually divided into five books - how to write a screenplay, a workbook of 7 steps to a stunning script, proper formatting technique, writing & revising, and a marketing plan for selling your script. I recommend this book for all levels of writers, particularly beginners. It's an easy, enjoyable read. The large print is easy on the eyes. This is a very inexpensive book in light of all the information contained in it. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.
The book is divided into Five main sections: "A Primer", " A Workbook", " A Style Guide", "A Script Consultant's View". and "A Marketing Plan". Not all sections are equal, but their value is dependent upon what you want to get out of your purchase.- Being new to screenwriting, I found the first section the most helpful. There are lots of examples for some concepts (fewer for others). Currently reading this section for the third time. Some of the need to re-read the text is because the writing style, some because of my learning style. Regardless, I am flagging things I feel are important for developing my skill set and refining my product.- Read the Workbook section(II) once. If you are perpetually in a writer's block, this may help you flush out the design of what you want to write. Otherwise, it's one person's idea of how to do something that is the "Art" of the matter.- Read the Formatting section(III) once and then delegated it to a reference position. It's there if needed, a good reference.- Script Consultant's section(IV) was a casual read. Had a couple things to keep in mind, but I wouldn't put this on my reference shelf if it wasn't already included in the book.- The Marketing Plan section(V) may come in handy in the future as something to re-read. Right now, it's less important to me than being confident that my script is polished and presentable.- Side note: My script was at a point where I, as a fledgling writer, wanted outside feedback. I submitted my script for three(3) different script consultant/reviews; The Austin Film Festival with a review option ($80), Industrial Scripts ($118), and this author's service ($475 discounted to $385 and advertised in this book). Cost was not a reflection of the attention that was given to reviewing the script. The GM at Industrial Scripts wrote in the cover letter that the reviewer had gone "above and beyond" reviewing my script. They had in fact gone a half page over the requirement and included encouraging remarks such as " - is brilliantly unusual, and has real potential." One of the other Script Consultants just included a lot of white space to fill up the minimum page requirement. Two of the three taught me the valuable lesson that some people who will "read" your script are less than enthusiastic about doing their job. One in particular needs to turn off the TV, or what ever is distracting them, to allow them to focus on the script. The other needs to learn to read, not skim. Good bet that we all will be subjected to that level of indifference again and again as we pursue this vocation. Don't let those folks get you down. May you find the person out there that actually wants to read your script. Cheers.
I purchased my first time when it was in the 3rd edition (2001) back when I was living in Germany, freshly out of the Military, a new mom and my husband was deployed. I needed something to keep me occupied and so, I took a writing course. But, no matter what I wrote, I never FINISHED anything. I had great ideas, but didn't understand how stories were supposed to be structured. I often started a story and wrote myself time and time again into a corner. So, I thought... hmmm... what about writing a script? It's more or less an outline with a bunch of dialogue, right? And of course, it's a whole hell of a lot more than that! But the most important thing it did for me was help me COMPLETE a story... finish it. 90 pages of a fully fleshed out story that moved through the ACTS just like Dave taught me with a backstory, catalyst, a big event, midpoint, crisis, climax, realization. And then, from that point forward... ALL of my outlines have hit all the major points he lists which makes writing my books a much easier task and I no longer write myself into a corner. Now, I think about these major plot points BEFORE I even write out my outline. And then, I write my story like a script with all the dialogue until I've hit the 90 pages. From there, I can tag the dialogue with action and fill in the description like a director sees it in their head. The updated edition is just as good, if not, BETTER than the 3rd edition. And I couldn't be more pleased with owning, now, TWO of these bibles!Thank you, Dave Trottier, for really helping me understand how act structures work and what PLOT POINTS actually are. I mean, I get that there are beats to a story like a song. But the way you explain things just make SENSE! Again... THANK YOU!
I'm a novice to the screenwriting world, and am working on my first one. This book is perfect for me. It's easy to read, full of loads of information, fairly simple to return to sections you need for reminders. I'm about 3/4ths of the way through, slowly working on my screenplay while reading through it. I love that it talks about specs, those meant to be sold, not to be made with all the extra camera directions. Highly recommended for someone like me, who was clueless on how to go about writing a screenplay. I'm sure it's good for those who are more experienced with it but want to put their script in the necessary format for selling.
We've used this as or go-to formatting guide in school for half a decade, and this updated version includes indispensable additions. Most notably, the 'Formatting' section contains updates for multi-cam sitcom writing, updates for tv writing in general, including multiple timelines, rapidly changing points of view, and short montages. The last version was our bible, but this new version has replaced it. In my opinion, this is the most helpful and complete formatting guide in print. Essential for any person writing for feature or television.
