This is definitely one of the weaker books in the series, but not for the reason everyone else feels. I personally didn't mind the choose your own ending. I just thought it was unnessacary.I'll start with what I liked. While B+B was the first book of the series, WS was where the series really started. B+B only hinted that there might be a larger plot and a larger world, but its mostly stand alone. In WS we start to see that it isn't just Prince Severine who was cursed for seemingly no reason, but nearly all of the courtiers (with the exception of Vergalas) are being hit by dark magic users and it seems to be a concerted effort. Why? For what purpose? It shows that there is a larger plot going on, and that all the books will be interconnected. I also liked the hints and references to other fairy tales Shea may or may not be writing in the future, and I liked the general story and the main character Elise. What I didn't like the most were Elise's brothers *ehem* I'm sorry, foster brothers. The way they treated her was borderline emotional abuse. For Elise's entire life she grew up believing that she was a charity case and didn't really belong. She tries, desperately at times, to prove that she's worthy to gain her brother's love and acceptance. I kind-of-sorta understand why Gerhart acts the way he does to her, he feels snubbed and overshadowed by Elise. I also understand Rune and Falk's behavior, but the other four brothers? The ones who supposedly genuinely like Elise and care for her as a sister? What's their excuse? You can't tell me that either Steffan or Mik didn't know that Elise wasn't feeling insecure for years, but they never once sit down with her and talk to her like normal human beings until the end of the story? No, that just isn't right.Maybe I shouldn't say I dislike the brothers. I like them as individuals, but when their all together their argumentative, rough, and overpowering. The other thing I disliked was the love triangle between Elise, Rune, and Faulk, but mostly because I generally disliked love triangles. I can definitely see Elise falling for either Faulk or Rune, but hate that she's stuck choosing between the two and the issue is left unresolved by the end of the story. The story is a part of a series with an overarching plot, but the romance is strictly an in-book plot device and only has relevance within this story. It doesn't matter to the other books who Elise picks, or even that this choice is a vital one, which means having a love triangle and a choose your own romantic ending is completely pointless. The love triangle even detracts from the story. Instead of getting a proper romantic development between Elise and whoever her love interest is, we get constant dog fighting between Rune and Faulk and a lot of confusion from Elise. This lack of development, more then anything else, is what dissatisfied a lot of readers because it made whatever ending they did choose in the end very unsatisfying. So in summary, Wild Swans is a solid story that has a strong (if a little bland) female lead but has confused relationships between characters and a love triangle that distracts from the plot and makes the choose your own ending an unsatisfying exercise for the reader.

After some serious contemplation I've decided that The Wild Swans is most definitely my absolute favorite book by Kitty. I can't say for sure exactly why, but I suspect it has something to do with the romance being a little subdued and therefore focusing more on the family ties. The original fairytale is one of my favorites as well, precisely because of this reason. After all, true love can come in many different forms-- and even romantic love plays a role in the love of family. This book was by far the most touching by Kitty. Elise's ventures and troubles felt true and actually painful, especially considering all that she's been through. At first her character didn't interest me as I found it vapid and unemotional. The title of "Perfect Princess" suit her then. But after the transformation, you get to see this new side of Fürstin Elise, this side that you admire amd respect and warm up to. Another noteworthy thing? Certainly the love triange. It frustrated me to watch Elise feel apathetic to either man at first, but then I couldn't help but start cheering whenever Falk scored a point. (Sometimes charming, flirtatious men become overrated.) Kitty handled the conflict as no other. And that might sound unprofessional, except that it was a welcome reprieve from the normal endings of these infuriating triangles. How do these conflict-loving authors expect us to sympathize with emotionless ladies who usually don't actually suffer in real life this way, I don't know. Anyways, yay for the princes! Gabrielle made a special feature in the story. The princes were hilarious...

I have always loved the story of the wild swan and couldn't wait to read it, I started with B&theB and then I finally bought TheWS and i was loving reading this story the characters the adventure everything until I got to the end AND THEN what the heck, you have to choose the guy you want when it felt pretty obvious to me which brother loved her for real and the other thing I didn't see it coming there was no point that I was unsure of who loved her, it was a great story and I couldn't put it down, but the ending ruined it because it makes it feel like there is no end, I"m so sad that it ended like that because it would of been one I would recommend to all my friends and would reread, it would be a keeper but for the end I cant, and it has also stopped me from continuing in the series, I loved beauty and the beast and couldn't wait to keep going in the series, it's a shame. If the ending made sense I would give it 5
