I was struggling to write my personal statement for my Medical School Application. This book was very helpful in not just giving examples of essays, it also showed the correct writing style and the philosophy that people need to use to write the essay. Overall, I highly recommend this book for all people that are thinking of applying to Medical School and all the people that are struggling with their writing.

Read the book. Wrote my essay. Got into med school. Done!

This book could be split into two parts: instructions on how to write an essay and sample essays. The instructions for essay writing were extremely useful. However, I had a few problems with the sample essays. Currently, 500 words is set as the limit for college essays. I believe the Common App actually cuts you off if you go over 500. Supplemental essays aren't quite as strict, but I just read a long lecture from Yale about how going over the word limit is disrespectful and inconsiderate. The Number essay in this book, the one they tout as the greatest essay pretty much ever, is probably four or five times longer than the limit. I'd say at least 3,000 words. That means their prime gems are absolutely useless for students trying to write a college essay and can't go off on long tangents. The book does feature shorter essays in its top ten list, but many of them are remarkably poorly written. I got second and third opinions from English teachers- some of the essays they rank quite highly are just plain bad.

The personal statements in this book are the classic cliches that everyone tells you to avoid. Unless that's what everyone is hiding and everyone is getting into medical school with cliche essays.

Wow, this book helped me SO much when I applied for college. I didn't really have a good idea of what great essays are until I read this book. Not only did it give step-by-step instructions of creating my perfect essays, it also provided a variety of sample essays on multiple subjects and of various lengths. I still remember reading an essay about this Princeton kid, who when he was little, used to explore the "world" as he walked along the creek. I shared his experience with this type of adventure and I ended up, in a way, modeling my essay on adventure based on it. Now, I'm studying finance at the world's #1 business school. I'm so glad I used this book to guide my essay-writing.

Must be taken with a grain of salt. Most of these essays are beyond what the ordinary student will ever write about. If, however, you have no clue where to begin and needs helpful exercises to start writing this book is perfect for you.

This was a gift!

This is a great read for students who are just beginning their essays, or for those who already have some ideas about how to start. I suggest it for all medical school personal statement writers.
